Members of the Speech and Drama Club are expected to meet and comply with all guidelines set for by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHAA) as well as guidelines established by the Clopton High School Student Handbook. Additionally, Mrs. Henderson's expects exceptional personal conduct as well as academic achievement. Failing grades will prohibit a student from competing in speech events and may prohibit participation in the Spring Play.

Meetings

Meetings are generally held monthly after school in Mrs. Henderson's room. Length of meeting depends on the amount of material to covered, but is generally no more than an hour. Day of meeting is determined by the availability of the membership.

Dues

In order to offset the various costs of our events, I ask that the students contribute twenty dollars per semester in order to be considered members in good standing. This fee will help pay for club and promotional t-shirts, competition entrance fees, various materials needed for the school play, etc. Other fees may be applied as necessary.

Events

Speech and Drama Club has two main events: the traveling competitions which take place from January-March (with Districts in March and state in April), and the spring theatrical production. While members are not required to be in both events, it is strongly recommended and are contributing factors to receiving the patch and pin for Speech and Drama.

SPEECH COMPETITIONS:

Clopton is a member of the Eastern Missouri Conference (EMO) for Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) for speech competition events. Our conference meet rotate among the member schools in the conference. The actual competition season typically begins in January and runs through the district competition in March, unless someone qualifies for the state competition in April. Competitions are generally invitational events, so the number of competitions and locations for competitions will vary. However, competitions are generally day-long events on Saturday. Event fees are offset by dues, but a small additional fee may be required at the time of competition. Additionally, we frequently stop for lunch at a fast food restaurant after tournaments, so lunch money may be required.

PLAYS AND MUSICALS:

Since many of our members are also involved in marching band, Speech and Drama club will produce one theatrical show in the spring. This show involves both actors as well as technical crew members and will be decided by Mrs. Henderson annually.

OFFICERS:

Speech and Drama Club currently has four offices: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Historian. All active members who will be a junior or senior for the upcoming year are eligible to hold any office. Active members who will be sophomores for the upcoming year are only eligible for Historian. The President will preside over the meetings and is generally expected to assist Mrs. Henderson with any and all club functions. The Vice President will preside when the President is unable and is generally expected to assist with any and all club functions. The Historian may be filled by two individuals (Or Co-Historians). This person(s) will be expected to document club events such as competitions or the play in order to share these images with the yearbook staff as well as hopefully to develop a club scarp book. All active members (including graduation seniors) present at the end of the year meeting are able to vote on the offices for the following year. Active members who are unable to be present may make arrangements with Mrs. Henderson to vote as well.
